How much does contractor general liability insurance cost in Arkansas?
Gerald Burns, Licensed Insurance Agent · July 2026
It's the first question every contractor asks, and most websites dodge it. Here's the honest answer: for many one-person and small-crew trades in Arkansas, general liability starts in the range of a modest monthly truck payment — and for riskier trades or bigger operations it climbs from there. Nobody can give you a real number without the details, because the details are the price.
What actually sets the price
- Your trade. A handyman doing interior trim and a roofer working at height are different worlds to an underwriter. Same revenue, very different premiums.
- Payroll and revenue. GL is usually rated on how much work you do — payroll, gross receipts, or both. Growing operation, growing premium.
- Limits. $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate is the standard ask on most job requirements. Higher limits cost more, but often less than people expect.
- Claims history. A clean record earns real credit. A past claim doesn't make you uninsurable — it changes which carrier wants you.
- Subcontractor use. Uninsured subs can be charged as if they were your payroll. Insured subs with certificates keep your rate honest.
Why the same contractor gets wildly different quotes
Contractor markets don't price alike. One carrier loves remodelers and punishes roofers; the next is the reverse. That spread is the whole argument for an independent agent: one application, several carriers, and you see who actually wants your trade this year. We do exactly that — see our contractor insurance page for what we cover.
How to keep your premium down — legitimately
- Keep payroll and revenue estimates accurate. Overstating inflates premium now; understating creates an audit bill later.
- Collect certificates from every sub, every time.
- Buy the limits the contract requires — not more by accident, not less and lose the job.
- Shop it at renewal. Loyalty is not a discount program.
One warning: the cheapest quote is sometimes cheap because it excludes the exact work you do. A roofing exclusion on a policy sold to a roofer is worthless paper. Read the exclusions — or use an agent who does.
