What contractors usually need

  • Workers' comp. In Minnesota from your first employee. In Arkansas generally at three or more.
  • Commercial auto. Work trucks, vans and trailers used for the business.

Need a certificate for a job?

Once you are our client, we aim to send certificates the same day you ask. Send us the insurance wording from the contract so the certificate meets it the first time. Not insured yet? We quote your trade first, and the certificate follows once your policy is in place. Getting a certificate fast.

Tools, equipment and new builds

General liability does not cover your own tools. Tools and equipment coverage does, and builders risk covers a project while it is being built. Read about tools and equipment coverage and builders risk.

Using subcontractors?

Collect a certificate from every sub on every job. If a sub cannot show their own coverage, your carrier can count what you paid them as your payroll at audit and bill you for it. Why audit bills come in high.

Trades we quote

Remodelers, handymen, painters, flooring, drywall, carpentry, landscaping, cleaning services and most other small trades. We quote first-year contractors too.

Contractor questions

I work alone. Do I need general liability?

If you work on other people's property, yes. One dropped ladder or one cut water line is what the policy is for, and most general contractors will not let you on site without proof.

What drives the price of contractor general liability?

Your trade, payroll or sales, state, claims history and the limits the job requires. Shopping several companies is how you know the price is fair. What drives the price.

Can I put my work truck on my personal auto policy?

If the truck is titled to the business or used for work regularly, it belongs on commercial auto. Personal policies often limit business use, and a work accident can get a personal claim denied. Personal vs commercial auto.

A contract wants higher limits than I have. What do I do?

Ask about an umbrella policy, which adds liability above your general liability limits. Send us the contract clause and we will quote what it asks for.
