A stone off a gravel truck leaves a star the size of a dime. You tell yourself it is nothing. Three cold mornings later it is a crack running the width of the windshield, and now it is a replacement instead of a repair.
This is the part most drivers have backwards. A rock strike, a falling branch, a break-in — that is comprehensive coverage. Collision is for what happens when you hit something. If you carry liability only, there is no glass coverage on the policy at all, because comprehensive is what pays for it.
A chip is a stress point in a laminated panel that expands and contracts every time the temperature swings or you run the defroster. It does not stay a chip. A repair is a short job that keeps the original factory seal; a replacement is a bigger job that breaks it. Many carriers treat repair more favorably than replacement precisely because they would rather pay for the small fix — ask what your policy does before you decide to live with it.
If your vehicle has lane keeping, adaptive cruise or automatic emergency braking, the camera for those systems is very likely mounted to the windshield. Replace the glass and that camera has to be recalibrated to the new panel. Skip the recalibration and the driver assistance features can read the road wrong — which is a safety problem before it is an insurance one. On many modern vehicles the recalibration is a meaningful share of the total bill, and it is a legitimate part of the claim.
Whether you carry comprehensive at all. What the comprehensive deductible is. Whether your carrier handles repair differently from replacement. Whether recalibration is included. And if you have a newer vehicle with driver assistance, say so — it changes what a windshield claim actually costs.
Damage in the driver's line of sight can fail an inspection and is a genuine visibility hazard at night and in rain, independent of anything the policy says. That alone is usually reason enough to deal with it early.
Glass is a small coverage that people only think about the morning it matters. Two minutes on your declarations page now is worth more than the phone call afterwards. See our home and auto insurance page.
